The Shaheed Minar was built in memory of the brave souls who lost their lives on '''February 21, 1952''', during a protest demanding the recognition of Bengali as an official language. The movement was sparked when the Pakistani government imposed Urdu as the sole national language, disregarding the majority Bengali-speaking population in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). The protests escalated, leading to police violence that resulted in the deaths of several students, including Rafiq Uddin Ahmed, Jabbar, and Salam.

In 1957, the original Shaheed Minar was constructed by the students of Dhaka University and the Dhaka city authorities to honor the martyrs. Over the years, the monument has undergone several renovations and expansions, becoming a symbol of the Bengali identity and pride.
